Adjustment days and swapped weekends
China adjusts weekends around long holidays. A Saturday or Sunday can become an official working day, announced by the State Council, and a model that only stores holidays will call that day rest when offices are open.
How tiaoxiu works in practice
To build a 7-day National Day break, the calendar takes the weekend before or after the holiday week and reassigns one or two of those weekend days as working days. Staff work on a Sunday, and get a weekday inside the break off instead. The total rest days in the year barely change. The shape of the week changes completely.
Why this breaks simple models
- A holiday-only model marks the swapped Saturday as weekend and misses a real working day.
- A weekend-only model counts the weekdays inside the break as working days.
- Both errors land inside the same week, so a delivery estimate for that week can be off by 3 days.
How we handle it, and what this dataset does
A complete dataset stores adjustment days as a separate entry type. This v1 dataset does not apply adjustment days, and the console says so on its page, because the dataset here is a national holiday list only. That gap is labelled rather than hidden, and counts for China should be read with it in mind.
Other countries swap days too, usually as one-off bridge days declared by decree. Chile and several Latin American governments announce them year by year. Each one needs its own source check, which is why these entries need a source field, not a rule of thumb.
